The Blind Spot That Could Make Millions
By Sean Goldsmith
The next great franchise opportunity may not be a new product, but an overlooked customer.
Every franchise success story starts with someone spotting an opportunity before everyone else does. The latest wave of men's wellness businesses suggests the next big opportunity may not be another product. It may be a customer the industry has underestimated for years.
One of the biggest myths in franchising is that the next great business idea starts with a brilliant product. That's certainly the story we like to tell. A new burger. A better coffee. A healthier smoothie. We spend so much time talking about what businesses sell that we often forget to ask a much more important question. Who are they really building the business for?
The more I looked at the growth of men's wellness businesses, the more I realised this isn't really a story about health at all. It's a story about how entirely new franchise categories are born. Long before a market becomes fashionable, somebody quietly notices a group of customers whose needs aren't being properly met. That's exactly how pet care franchises became a global success, why senior care grew into one of franchising's biggest sectors and why home service businesses exploded as consumers began paying more for convenience than for location.
Now, some believe the same thing could be happening in men's wellness.
Businesses such as GameDay Men's Health, 4Ever Young and the wider growth of companies like Fella Health aren't simply selling treatments or healthcare services. They're responding to a noticeable shift in consumer behaviour. Men are becoming more willing to talk about preventative healthcare, weight management, hormone health, mental wellbeing and healthy ageing than they were even a decade ago. Whether driven by changing attitudes, greater awareness or better access to specialist services, the result is a customer group that's becoming increasingly comfortable investing in its own wellbeing.
What's interesting is how long this opportunity sat in plain sight.
For years, franchising enthusiastically built businesses around beauty, fitness, childcare, education and pet care because the demand was easy to see. Meanwhile, much of the men's wellness market remained fragmented, with relatively few businesses creating experiences specifically designed around men's changing expectations. That doesn't mean there wasn't spending. It simply means few operators viewed it as the foundation for an entire franchise category.
History suggests that's often how the biggest opportunities begin.
The strongest franchise concepts rarely invent demand. They recognise it before everyone else does. They spot a behavioural shift, build a business around it and, by the time competitors arrive, they've already established a reputation, refined their systems and built customer loyalty. Looking back, those opportunities always seem obvious. At the time, they rarely are.
Of course, not every emerging category becomes the next billion-pound success story. Some generate excitement before fading away, while others take years to prove themselves commercially. Supporters of men's wellness believe the market is still in its early stages and has significant room for growth. Others would argue it's too soon to know which business models will succeed over the long term. That's a perfectly reasonable debate, and it's one every emerging sector goes through.
For franchise operators, though, the bigger lesson has very little to do with men's wellness itself. The businesses that consistently outperform the market are often the ones asking different questions. Instead of wondering what the next product should be, they're asking which customer has quietly changed, whose needs are evolving and where demand is building long before it becomes obvious to everyone else.
That's why I think this story matters.
It's not because men's wellness is guaranteed to become franchising's next major category.
It's because it reminds us how successful franchise systems are usually built.
Not by chasing the busiest market.
But by recognising the overlooked customer before everyone else does.
