What Dogs Can Teach Every Franchisor

By Tam Goldsmith

Premium pet franchises aren't just changing pet care. They're changing what customers expect from every service business.

The biggest change in pet care has very little to do with dogs. It has everything to do with what customers now expect from every service business.

There was a time when leaving your dog somewhere for the day was a straightforward transaction. You dropped them off before work, collected them a few hours later and hoped they had enjoyed themselves. As long as they came home happy and healthy, most owners were satisfied.

That is no longer enough.

Today's pet owners expect live webcams, regular updates, personalised care, wellness programmes and staff who know their dog's personality almost as well as they do. They want reassurance throughout the day and they are increasingly prepared to pay more for it. The result is that premium pet care has quietly evolved from a simple service into an experience, and that shift is creating one of the most interesting lessons in modern franchising.

Dogtopia is one of the brands leading that change. On the surface it operates dog daycare centres, but its investment in technology, customer communication and wellness programmes tells a much bigger story. The business is no longer simply looking after dogs while their owners are at work. It is building long-term relationships with customers by giving them confidence that their pets are receiving exceptional care every time they walk through the door.

Other brands are following a similar path. Camp Bow Wow has introduced a new operating model designed to make the business more attractive to multi-unit franchisees while improving the experience for customers. Rather than competing purely on convenience or price, premium pet brands are investing in stronger systems, better facilities and technology that helps owners stay connected with their pets throughout the day.

That should matter to every franchisor, regardless of the industry they operate in, because the same shift is happening across the wider service economy.

Customers no longer judge businesses solely on the product or service they receive. They remember how confident they felt choosing that business in the first place, how well they were kept informed and whether every interaction lived up to the promises made by the brand. Luxury hotels understood that years ago, and the strongest service franchises are now adopting exactly the same mindset.

The real opportunity is not in pet care itself. It is in recognising that customers are increasingly paying for certainty rather than simply paying for a service. Whether someone is choosing a childcare provider, a fitness studio, a dental practice or a dog daycare, they are placing their trust in a brand that promises a consistent experience every time. Businesses that invest in delivering that consistency are finding it much easier to build loyalty than those still competing primarily on price.

Perhaps that explains why so many franchise brands continue to chase rapid expansion while others quietly focus on improving the systems behind the business. Opening more locations will always be important, but growth becomes much more sustainable when every customer leaves with complete confidence that they made the right decision.

Dogtopia's success is therefore about much more than dogs. It demonstrates that the businesses attracting today's customers are not necessarily offering better products. They are creating better experiences, and that is becoming one of the strongest competitive advantages any franchise can build.

What Franchisors Should Do Next

Take an honest look at your customer journey and identify every point where uncertainty still exists. Consider how technology, communication and operational consistency could remove those concerns while giving customers greater confidence in your brand. The businesses that invest in trust today are likely to build stronger customer loyalty and healthier franchise networks tomorrow.
